Abstract:

Chiefly commercial tourist views of Japan and Egypt from the late 19th century. Hand-colored photographs from Japan include group and individual portraits of Japanese women, possibly courtesans, modeling kimonos and other articles of traditional attire, or posing in everyday scenes and situations, with printed captions such as "Tea house girls", "Singing girls", "Windy and rainy day" and "Bath room". Also includes a view of many women posing on the balcony of an establishment -- likely a brothel -- in the Maruyama district of Nagasaki, a quarter known for its prostitution that served various foreign and tourist communities in the port city. Also includes 2 composite prints: one promoting the variety of subjects available in views from a commercial photography studio, the other promoting a studio's childhood portraiture. Also includes an image of a flower. Photographs from Egypt and vicinity taken by the Zangaki firm include a view of Cairo showing many minarets, a view of palm trees with pyramids in the far distance, the boat "Olga" on the Nile, and the Great Pyramid of Khufu. Photographs by Bonfils include a scene of Gizeh (now Giza) during a flood, and a view of the Golden Gate in Jerusalem, Palestine. Also includes a set of amateur views of Egypt, taken by an unknown photographer, depicting the Great Sphinx, foreign tourists posing under a palm tree, water trucks in the street, a boat at sea or on the Nile, and various unidentified structures, landscapes and fields. Also includes one commercial view of Hawaii depicting Nu'uanu Pali, near Honolulu, O'ahu
